STAYING HEALTHY
Strength training along with exercise and a well-balanced diet are essential for healthy living. The Miami Project “Staying Healthy” section is designed to promote physical health and well being by providing dozens of resources for individuals with a spinal cord injury.
The guides, tips and connections found on this site were carefully selected to help individuals with spinal cord injury to increase their strength and endurance while preventing injuries and additional complications. We have also targeted health issues associated with poor eating habits and included guides for effective weight loss, hydration and weight maintenance.
DIET AND NUTRITION
Eating healthy is something we all know we should do, but we don’t always know how. It doesn’t have to be hard, start with small changes first!
EXERCISE
There are many ways to exercise, as well as many reasons. It helps increase your strength and endurance, but can also help prevent other problems from developing.
The “best exercise prescription is one that 1) improves strength, anaerobic power, endurance, and flexibility; 2) achieves musculoskeletal balance, while sparing shoulder pain and upper extremity decline; 3) improves everyday functioning; 4) addresses heart disease and diabetes risk factors; and 5) generates interest and continued participation.
SPORTS AND LEISURE
Living healthy doesn’t have to be boring! There are many ways you can include sports or leisure activities into your daily life and have fun while you are burning energy!
STRETCHING
Stretching is an important part of keeping your body healthy. You may also hear it referred to as passive range of motion.
