Neurophysiology

Research in the area of neurophysiology focuses on how the nervous system functions. Scientists at The Miami Project use neurophysiological tests to investigate impulses between nerve cells and their communication with muscles to control voluntary movement. Researchers use these tests to understand the mechanisms of neuromuscular fatigue, weakness and spasms, conditions often seen after injury.

Miami Project neurophysiology researchers are uncovering the types of neurotransmitters that are important for motor functions, such as walking, that can be reduced after spinal cord injury. These studies will provide the basis for neurotransmitter replacement therapy to stimulate local reflex pathways in the spinal cord and promote recovery. Investigations on the effects of electrical stimulation combined with rehabilitation, as well as direct stimulation of the brain and spinal cord to promote motor and sensory recovery from spinal cord injury, are also important areas of interest for The Miami Project team.
