SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER

MAKE A DONATION

The Southern California Chapter was established in 2023, and is currently led by Volunteer Regional Director Bill McMillan.

In an effort to enhance the research efforts of the scientists at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, The Buoniconti Fund established volunteer Chapters in cities throughout the country. These Chapters are an important element to reaching The Miami Project’s goal — a cure for paralysis.

A Message from our SoCal Volunteer Regional Director, Bill McMillan

My why is simple- I have skin in the game!  My son David is the Director of Education and Outreach for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.  As any parent will tell you, if something is important to your children it is by default important to you.

Through David and the work that he does I have come to see the challenges and trials that those in chairs face and the grace and beauty that they display in conquering them.  People like Kenny who is a certified dive master and takes paraplegic and quadriplegic people scuba diving with the Therapeutic Scuba Institute and who has the best sense of humor.  People like Frank who works with clients in the modified gym at the Miller School of Medicine, barking at them and kidding with them and driving them in their physical therapies.  And people like Kelsey who is a renowned advocate for those in chairs; she is on a mission to make the City of Maui more chair friendly and she has a smile that can light up a room!

These people and thousands like them deal with so many challenges every day; things that many of us take for granted.  For them, and of course for my son David and his colleagues in this field, I pledge to do all that I can to help alleviate these challenges and to find a cure for paralysis.
